April 20th Earth Week James Ardiel Cleanup Party
« on: February 21, 2012, 07:45:43 PM »
Plans and process are underway to create a James Ardiel Cleanup Party during Earth Week / Surrey Clean Sweep - planned for Friday April 20th 2012.

The idea (copied from the success of Bridgeview Elementary) are to have students, parents, teachers, supporting community get involved to help clean up the area around James Ardiel and East up towards Grosvenor - the bus stop area, grocery store, and high-traffic areas for pedestrians & of course, garbage.

An application is in place with the City of Surrey for some small funding to help with getting some drinks and wee snacks for the kids - but otherwise this is totally Volunteer and community support based.

If you are interested or know someone who wants to help out & be involved - please contact bini@bolivarheights.ca 604-258-8301

Happy to report that we have received a grant to assist with the purchase of snacks & drinks for the volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering please contact bini@bolivarheights.ca or attend the General Open BHCA Association meeting on April 10th @ the lower Bolivar Heights Park Trailer (in the ballpark parking lot on 115th).

The current plan is:

Friday April 20th 2012.
9am James Ardiel: Garbage collecting supplies will be available for adult volunteers who would like to start early. Routes will be identified for cleanup & pickup.

12:00~1:00pm Parents & Adults social & refreshments - 12:00 ~ 1:00pm @ James Ardiel. Meet the Bolivar Heights Community Association Members, area Blockwatch members & RCMP. Finalize teams / routes.

1:00pm~2:00pm Students, Parents, Community Volunteers clean up around specific routes. Treat for the kids! Kids return to class.

1:45pm~2:15pm Garbage collection & centralization for photo & pickup @ James Ardiel

Big thanks to everyone that came out to help (or even hoped they might be able to attend but couldnt due to the event being during the day!).

It was totally awesome. The entire school was out in force (the weather gods were smiling on us as well). The kids were racing each other to grab garbage. They waved & called out to drivers them and the streets were alive with honks of support. The pile of garbage was immense (for 1 school but only in 1 hour) - even the garbage collector guys assumed it was an all day event!

We had pizza & drinks for the adults (drinks left over for the next event as well). We also purchased (and received as well) gifts for the students (a prize draw).

The school has sent us a thank-you card for all our efforts and would like this event to happen again!

Here are some of the supporters:

Gerry Morden Community Clean Landscapes
Colleen & RCMP & Bylaws
City of Surrey Partners in Parks
Pitch-In Canada
James Ardiel Parents Association
Olympia Pizza on King George (for the discount)
Whalley Printers (for the signs for Gerry's group)
Cindy P. (for getting the banner)

and of course

you guys!!!!
