TransLink: Pattullo Bridge needs replacing
NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS1130) - TransLink is asking for your opinion on plans for a new Pattullo Bridge. Over the next four days workshops will be held in New Westminster and Surrey where you can discuss ideas for the proposed bridge alignment.
Every day tens of thousands of you drive the 75-year-old bridge linking New Westminster and Surrey. The transit authority says it's time for a rebirth of the bridge as it was only designed for 50 years of use.
Most of you who use the bridge are worried about safety and how the bridge will be paid for. "I want to see a bridge that's safe, has a little bit more room for trucks so they don't have to take up two lanes and keeps flow going," says one driver.
Yesterday, News1130 brought you the story of a New Westminster city councillor who is tired of his city being clogged by traffic. Chuck Puchmayr is worried a new bridge will bring even more traffic to the Royal City. He wants trucks to use the Port Mann Bridge instead, once it's done being revamped.
TransLink believes a new bridge will improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, trucks, and drivers.
There are a couple of options TransLink is considering. The first is the location of the bridge and the second is how drivers will get on the bridge.
You are being asked to pre-register for the workshops as space is limited. This is the first phase of the two-year public consultation process. In early March, TransLink will post an online webinar answering your questions related to the project.
