Sounds of Summer concert at The Glades

Summer sunsets, live music and stunning settings. From guitars to sitars, classical melodies to blues beats, you’ll hear it all during Surrey’s Sounds of Summer. This free performance series in the city is a fantastic way to discover a new garden, rediscover a favourite space, or relax and unwind within a beautiful outdoor setting.

Each space is unique, as are the performances that will take place in each of them. This year, we've added 2 performances to the plaza at City Hall and a special performance at The Grove beside the Newton Recreation Centre to kick off the city's Pianos on the Street program.

Be sure to bring your folding chairs, blankets and picnic baskets to fully enjoy all 9 performances with Sounds of Summer! Performances are from 6:30 to 8pm each evening.

Subject: Whalley's Corner Street Sign Dedication Ceremony

The purpose of this memo is to invite Mayor and Council to attend an unveiling of the new Historic District street signs at “Whalley’s Corner” during the Whalley’s Corner Community Festival.

Date:                    Saturday June 27th

Time:                    11 am to 4 pm

Ceremony:         1 pm

Location:             Festival Stage: Grosvenor Road and Whalley Boulevard (see attached)

Over the past few years, business owners and community members have come together to meet and discuss opportunities and challenges in the area around King George Boulevard and 108th Avenue.  The group, called the Whalley Community Improvement Association, has been instrumental in working with City staff, elected officials and the RCMP to bring positive change to the area.  The group has helped to network and connect community members and businesses to each other.

To acknowledge this community engagement, the City has developed new street signs to be placed in 6 locations along King George Boulevard between Bentley Road and 107 A Avenue.  The signs recognize the importance of “Whalley’s Corner” in the development of this historic district, and celebrate the commitment of residents and business owners to work on further enhancing this area.

Invited guests from the Whalley Community Improvement Association, the RCMP, members of the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association, Surrey City Staff, residents and elected officials who are working on improving the area around Whalley’s Corner will come together at the festival stage at the Whalley’s Corner Community Festival for an opportunity to unveil the signs and celebrate the recent achievements made in creating a stronger and more connected community.

Councillor Steele will be in attendance to provide welcoming remarks.

Surrey RCMP News Release

Title:  Surrey RCMP announces second series of Neighbourhood Safety Presentations

Surrey RCMP’s five District Commanders will be hosting the second series of Neighbourhood Safety Presentations between May 20th and May 28th at local Surrey schools.

In January 2015, Surrey RCMP launched the Neighbourhood Safety Campaign to provide residents with greater access to the information they need to mobilize their community and enhance safety in their neighbourhood. The first series of Neighbourhood Safety Presentations was attended by over 500 residents.

“For crime prevention to be truly effective, it requires a coordinated effort between residents and police,” says S/Sgt. Scott Campbell, Acting Community Services Officer. “We are looking forward to connecting with more residents and addressing crime concerns in those areas.”

Each Neighbourhood Safety Presentation provides residents with information on local crime trends, current policing initiatives, property crime, and how to report crime and suspicious activity. Attendees will also learn how they can play a role in crime prevention.

Upcoming Neighbourhood Safety Presentations:
•Bridgeview Neighbourhood – May 20th at Bridgeview Elementary (6:30pm)
•Greenaway/Cowtown Neighbourhood – May 21st at George Greenaway Elementary (6:30pm)
•Semiahmoo Neighbourhood – May 26th at Semiahmoo Secondary (6:30pm)
Bolivar Heights Neighbourhood – May 27th at James Ardiel Elementary (6:30pm)
•Chimney Heights Neighbourhood – May 28th at Chimney Hill Elementary (6:30pm)

Registration is available on the Surrey RCMP website at www.surrey.rcmp.ca (click “Neighbourhood Safety Campaign” under “Policing Highlights”) or by contacting the Crime Prevention Coordinator at your local RCMP District Office.
